Regional focus on GM crop regulation.

چکیده
THE RECENT MEDIA COVERAGE OF THE DEVELopments in Brazil, China, and Mexico (1–3) demonstrates their emergence as the future developing country forerunners for commercial genetically modified (GM) crops in both the scientific and regulatory arena. The release of GM crops in these countries might result in the unintentional entry of GM seeds into neighboring countries that have not yet harnessed the technology and implemented sufficient regulatory systems. Unregulated “genetic contamination” of areas intended for growing GM-free or organic products, perhaps for export, could be potentially devastating for some neighboring economies and could set a negative example in the international efforts for the safe use of GM crops.” Should Brazil, China, or Mexico decide to allow the commercial release of GM crops,

Methodological scheme for designing the monitoring of genetically modified crops at the regional scale.
According to EC regulations the deliberate release of genetically modified (GM) crops into the agro-environment needs to be accompanied by environmental monitoring to detect potential adverse effects, e.g. unacceptable levels of gene flow from GM to non-GM crops, or adverse effects on single species or species groups thus reducing biodiversity. There is, however, considerable scientific and pub...
متن کاملEx-Ante Regulation and Ex-Post Liability under Uncertainty and Irreversibility: Governing the Coexistence of GM Crops
Ex-ante regulations and ex-post liabilities for using a new technology will induce additional costs for adopters. The standard model is advanced by including irreversibility and uncertainty and taking into account transaction costs of negotiating possible cost reductions. The case analysed is the coexistence policy for GM crops in the European Union. Results show, the design of the rules and re...

متن کاملAfrica needs streamlined regulation supporting deployment of GM crops Howard
Future food security in Sub-Saharan Africa requires enhancement of its crop production. Transgenic crops with a poverty focus can enhance harvests and are available for staples such as cooking bananas and plantains. One constraint is optimisation of national biosafety processes to support rapid and safe uptake of such beneficial crops. Africa needs streamlined regulation supporting deployment o...
